MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage and its Benefits?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, skin-stretching technique that uses light, rhythmic techniques – without the use of lotion or oil – to support the natural movement of lymph fluid. Specialized methods stimulate superficial and deep lymph vessels and indirectly deeper lymph nodes, enhancing their function and helping reroute stagnant fluid, promoting better circulation, filtration, and overall mobility.
The body functions as a whole – nothing is in isolation.
The lymphatic system plays a vital role in maintaining immune health. When properly stimulated, it can positively influence other systems in the body, including the vascular, musculoskeletal, nervous systems, and digestive system.
MLD should feel relaxing and soothing, not painful
MLD for General Wellness:
- Boosting immune function by clearing excess fluid, waste, and pathogens – including viruses and bacteria – while relieving congested sinuses and supporting digestive health
- Promoting deep relaxation through calming, light touch that helps regulate the nervous system and ease pain sensitivity
- Reducing/minimizing chronic symptoms related to Lipedema
MLD for pre-/post-surgery:
- Reducing swelling and pain by accelerating lymph flow in areas affected by injury, surgery, scars, or chronic conditions, which helps restore mobility and function
- Enhancing skin health by decreasing puffiness, soothing irritation, and improving skin tone and texture to help reduce the appearance and complications that scars create
MLD for Primary/Secondary Lymphedema:
- Supports compromised or damaged vessels and nodes as a result of trauma to the tissue, like surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, which requires a specialized treatment approach now that the lymph needs to be redirected
Having your therapist communicate with your specialist(s) requires your written consent, which may enhance your care
- CDT Combined Decongestive Therapy enhances the support of MLD by adding other elements to treatments, like bandaging or compression applications, as well as home care tools to assist in managing comfort
Chronic stress is a major contributor to illness; the deep relaxation achieved during and after MLD is one of its most valuable health benefits.
What to Expect During Treatment
Please note that your appointment time includes more than just hands-on treatment.
For initial appointments, this assessment typically takes about 20 minutes. Follow-up appointments may require less time.
Each session begins with a review of your health history, based on the forms you’ve completed before your visit. The practitioner then performs a visual and physical assessment to better understand any limitations and identify potential contraindications. From there, we create a treatment plan outlining the specific goals and focus areas for your session.
As a healthcare professional, I make it a priority to ensure safe client-centred care so you’re fully informed and comfortable before we begin. I encourage you to ask questions, request modifications, or decline any part of the treatment—at any time, before or during the session.
At the end of your appointment, we’ll take a few minutes to discuss your response to the treatment and, if appropriate, introduce remedial exercises for home care to support your recovery.
How to Prepare for your Treatment and Precautions
- Stay well-hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment—not just on the day of treatment.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing regularly to minimize unnecessary compression on your tissues and support healthy circulation. * wear compression garments as instructed
- Keep moving throughout the day. Gentle, regular movement helps stimulate your lymphatic system and keeps fluids flowing efficiently.
Absolute Contraindications
